Nigeria: Volkswagen Emerges World's Biggest Automaker Ahead of Toyota

Barely one month after Volkswagen restarted production at the Nigerian plant to increase global market and sales potential, the auto company on Wednesday emerged world's largest carmaker by sales in the first half year, achieving its long-held ambition three years ahead of target.
Volkswagen's Africa Sales and Marketing helmsman Wolfgang Ratz, had recently said: "We are certain that further growth is possible, which is why Volkswagen is constantly searching for new opportunities to increase global market and sales potential and we appreciate the fact that we are able to strengthen our business relationship with our professional partner Stallion."
The carmaker, which also owns the Audi (AUDVF) and Porsche (POAHY) brands, had on July 17 reported 5.04 million deliveries in the first half year, outmanoeuvring Toyota's 5.02 million cars between January and June of the corresponding period.
As automakers are being challenged by softening conditions in markets like China and Russia, Volkswagen was cautious about the outlook describing its performance so far this year as "satisfactory".
Toyota admitted on Tuesday that sales were dragged down by a slowdown in emerging markets and increased taxes on mini vehicles in Japan. Volkswagen currently has over 310 models and nearly 120 factories worldwide.
