Kenya Power plans to convert its 2,000 vehicles to electric

Kenya Power, the country's main power distributor, plans to convert 2,000 petrol and diesel-powered cars to electric during the next four years.

 

The effort is part of a growing trend in the East African economy to use the ample energy supply from renewable sources to convert automobile and motorbike engines from fossil fuels to electric.

According to Kenya Power, the country's installed generation capacity is 3,321 megawatts (MW), with a peak demand of 2,132 MW and an off-peak demand of around 1,100 MW.

 

Charging electric vehicles, particularly at night, would therefore assist bridge the gap between off-peak load available generating capacity and boost average demand over 1,500 MW.

 

The corporation provides power to more over three-quarters of Kenya's population.
