Chinese automaker JMC makes its debut in Kenya

In collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Caetano Kenya has introduced the Vigus range of locally produced cars targeted at Kenyan professionals under the JMC brand in Kenya.
The locally built JMC Vigus pickups, which use Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits manufactured in China, will be sold by Caetano. It is anticipated that the agreement will boost employment, encourage skill development, and support the expansion of the regional car sector.
The Vigus portfolio, which consists of the Carrying Plus Truck, Vigus Pro Single Cab, and Vigus Pro Double Cab, is built for dependability, longevity, and low operating expenses.
With pricing between Sh3.3 million and Sh4.99 million, the cars provide an affordable option in Kenya's expanding commercial vehicle industry.
At the launch, Aurelien Glay, Managing Director of Caetano Kenya, stated, "Today, we are laying the foundation for a new era in Kenya’s commercial vehicle industry."
He continued, "Our goal is clear: to provide solutions that make a real difference, both in terms of performance and economic impact."
Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers (KVM) will assemble the Chinese-sourced CKD kits in accordance with regional guidelines. The Ford Puma engine, which has been optimized for fuel economy and lower emissions, is one of the technological advancements found in the JMC vehicles.
In 2025, Caetano Kenya expects sales of at least 100 JMC units, fueled by the expansion of the local economy and the growing popularity of Chinese goods.
With technical personnel educated on the JMC cars, the company has partnered with dealers around Kenya to offer after-sales service.
Leading Chinese commercial vehicle maker JMC produces up to 545,000 vehicles a year and exports to more than 70 countries.
Hyundai, Kia, Renault, and Ford are among the top automobile brands distributed in Kenya by Caetano Kenya, a division of the Salvador Caetano Group that has operations in 41 countries.
The Salvador Caetano Group has been involved in the distribution, assembly, and manufacturing of automobiles for about 80 years.
