EV Growth & Technology: Kenya's Electric Revolution Accelerates

Kenya is emerging as a hotspot for green mobility. A drive through Nairobi today reveals a growing number of “green-plated” vehicles and quiet electric buses moving through traffic. Data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) shows that EV power consumption in the country has jumped by an impressive 300% over the past year.

 

This goes beyond a passing trend—it signals a major transformation in transportation. Local innovators such as Roam are expanding charging networks, while MojaEV is introducing advanced models like the NETA V, marking the arrival of electric cars as a mainstream option in Kenya.

 

One long-standing challenge for EV adoption has been “range anxiety,” or the worry of running out of charge without access to a charging point. Roam is addressing this with its “Roam Point” network, a system of universal fast-charging stations.

 

These stations are built to be interoperable, meaning they support multiple vehicle types rather than a single brand. Using Type 6 connectors, they can charge electric motorcycles, tuk-tuks, and even smaller passenger cars.

 

Although electric two-wheelers initially led the shift, passenger vehicles are quickly gaining ground. MojaEV’s launch of the NETA V in Kenya has attracted attention for its practicality and performance.

 

Designed as a compact SUV for city use, the NETA V offers a driving range of around 380–400 km on a single charge—enough for nearly a week of commuting for the average Nairobi driver.

 

The sharp rise in EV adoption is no coincidence. The Kenyan government has reduced excise duty on electric cars from 20% to 10% and removed VAT entirely. Alongside rising fuel prices, these incentives are making EV ownership increasingly cost-effective.

 

Looking ahead to 2026, the outlook is even more promising. As infrastructure continues to improve and more companies enter the market, Kenya is moving toward a future where refueling means plugging in rather than stopping at a petrol station.
